1. Choose the Right Business Structure

Once a name is approved, you will need to file the necessary documents and forms, such as Form INC-1 for name reservation and Form INC-7 for company registration.

3. Obtain a Trade License

This license authorizes you to conduct business in a specific area and ensures compliance with local regulations. The process and requirements for obtaining a trade license vary depending on your business location and type.

4. Register for Goods and Services Tax (GST)

If your business’s annual turnover exceeds the threshold limit set by the GST Act (currently ₹40 lakhs for most businesses), you must register for Goods and Services Tax (GST). GST registration is done through the GST portal, where you need to provide details such as your business name, address, and type of business activities. GST registration allows you to collect GST from customers and claim input tax credits.

5. Register with the Professional Tax Authority

Depending on your state, you may need to register for professional tax, which is levied on individuals and entities earning income through professional or business activities. Registration is typically required for employees and businesses, and the process involves submitting an application to the state’s professional tax authority.

6. Apply for an Import Export Code (IEC)

If your business involves importing or exporting goods, you must obtain an Import Export Code (IEC) from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). The IEC is a mandatory requirement for conducting international trade and is obtained by submitting an application through the DGFT’s online portal.

7. Register with the Shops and Establishments Act

If you operate a retail or commercial establishment, you must register under the Shops and Establishments Act applicable in your state. This registration regulates working conditions, employment terms, and other operational aspects of your business. The registration process involves submitting details about your business premises and operations to the local labor department.

8. Obtain Industry-Specific Licenses and Permits

Certain industries may require additional licenses or permits based on their nature of operations. For example, food businesses need a Food License from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), while healthcare providers may need licenses from medical councils. Ensure that you research and obtain all industry-specific licenses to comply with regulations.

9. Open a Business Bank Account

Once your business is registered, open a separate business bank account to manage your finances. A dedicated business account helps in maintaining clear records, managing cash flow, and separating personal and business expenses. Most banks require a copy of your business registration documents to open an account.

10. Compliance and Ongoing Obligations

After registering your business, ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements, including annual filings, tax payments, and adherence to labor laws. Regularly review and update your registration details as needed and stay informed about any changes in regulations that may affect your business.
